#HillarysCrafternoon Newcastle with Joe Blogs...

Hello you lovely people!

Something I've always wanted to do is learn how to sew and I don't just mean in a straight line!  I love fashion and have always been fascinated by the idea of making my own clothes.  I watch the Sewing Bee every year in absolute awe of the lovely contestants and promise myself that when the time is right I'll take classes and be able to do it myself!  But you know how it is, work and life always seem to get in the way of everything!  I have just recently picked up sewing again and lovely Mama L is helping me learn the basics, so imagine my luck when I found out that the lovely people at the Joe Blogs Network were teaming up with Hillary's Blinds to throw a crafty sewing afternoon in Newcastle!  I couldn't wait to see what they had in store for us!

The event was held at the Jazz Cafe on Forth Lane in Newcastle a few Saturday's ago and was a great opportunity to catch up with some familiar faces and to meet some new North East bloggers in the process.  I went along to the event with Chloe, a sewing beginner by her own admission but she's a pro at eating biscuits and gossiping away, so that suited me just fine!

Our first task of the day, set by the lovely ladies from The Crafty Hen , was to use some of the fabulous fabrics from the new Hillary's range to bind an exercise book.  The ladies gave us a quick demonstration then left us to our own devices.  This task only required a few stitches and we were even offered glue guns to embellish our books, but I wanted to put my sewing skills to the test so decided to sew mine in its entirety.  I chose a cream fabric with pink flowers and pink embellishments to finish off the look.  I was pretty pleased with my finished book and couldn't wait to start the next task.

Our second task was to create the cutest little bird, albeit a little more difficult than the first.  I chose a blue fabric this time and set straight to it, but sewed a little close to the edge so sadly my little bird was a bit frayed.  I didn't quite manage to finish him at the session, but I made sure he was stuffed and repaired at home and secretly squealed inside when one of the crafty ladies told me I had used incredibly neat running stitch...#sewinggeek.  Chloe's brain was frazzled by this point so she spent the time snapping away and helping me keep my work space tidy...thanks Chloe!

I had such a fun afternoon and the time passed by so quickly.  The range of printed fabrics offered by Hillary's is truly amazing; we were only working with a small selection of them but even just flicking through the brochure you can see that there really is something there to suit every taste and style.  You can find out more about Hillary's Crafternoon's here.

Thanks so much to the Joe's team for inviting me and providing some great photos, to the lovely ladies from Crafty Hen's for helping me with my sewing and making the tasks so much fun and to the people from Hillary's for providing such a great product for us to work with; it was such a great event!

(As well as my own, photography in this post was provided by Joe Blog's and Chloe, thanks guys!)

  1. Don't you mean I spent the rest of my time completely distracting you from sewing up your bird?! ;)
