Day 3: #Throwback, my Mister's 31st birthday...

Hello lovelies!

Day 3 of Coco's advent calendar was never intended to be a #throwback post!  But nevertheless, as it's over two months since we celebrated my lovely Mister's 31st birthday, that's what it has become!

My Mister's birthday is on September 30th, and usually we plan a weekend away for it.  This year however, as we'd not long been back from Paris we decided to celebrate a little closer to home, so headed up to Newcastle for the day.  I had a little day of goodies planned out for us, starting with a trip to the Life  Science Centre.

Chris is really interested in all things science and has a real scientific mind, so when I heard about the 'Body World's Vital' exhibition I knew it would be right up his street and a perfect part to his birthday celebrations.  If you haven't heard about 'Body World's Vital' yet, then here is a little quote from the Science Centre's website which I personally think sums it up perfectly...

'BODY WORLDS Vital, an awe-inspiring journey through the human body, celebrating its complexity, beauty and potential, makes its UK debut at Life in May 2014. BODY WORLDS Vital brings together a collection of real human bodies, specimens, organs and body slices which have been willed by donors and preserved through Plastination, a ground-breaking method for specimen preservation invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens. This special collection of specimens is designed to show visitors the basics of human health and wellness. The exhibition includes whole-body plastinates, a large arrangement of individual organs, organ and arterial configurations, and translucent slices that give a complete picture of how the human body works. Vital tells the fascinating story of how best to fight life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart ailments, through healthy choices and lifestyle changes.'

Unfortunately photography is not allowed in the Body World's exhibition but if you are interested in going, you can see images and read more about it here I was really apprehensive
as I'm quite a squeamish person but it was absolutely amazing!  The plastinates are arranged beautifully and are so interesting to look at; it really brings science to life!  You'll learn so much about the body from it; we absolutely loved it!  And as part of the entry fee for Body World's you can see the whole of the centre, so we also went on a 4D roller-coaster ride which was so much fun (and we got sprayed with water!!) and visited the Planetarium to see 'What's Up Einstein?'.  I really enjoyed the Planetarium last time, but found the Einstein show boring, so if you're visiting I'd give that one a miss!

After Life, we headed into Newcastle for a quick look around the shops but as it was Chris's birthday I wanted to let him choose what we did, so shortly after we headed to Floritas for cocktails.  I'm not really much of a drinker so I've not sampled the bars in Newcastle but I was really impressed with Floritas.  As it was late afternoon, it wasn't too busy but there was a great atmosphere.  The setting was both relaxed and vibrant and the cocktails were buy one get one free which was even better!! I got a 'Morello Cherry Sour' and Chris opted for a 'Bolivian Mojito'.  I can't speak for Chris's, but mine was amazing!  It was so refreshing and you could really taste the cherry, it was such an enjoyable drink!

Cherry on the left, Mojito on the right!

Silly faces in Floritas!

I booked Jamie's Italian as a special birthday treat for Chris.  We both love Jamie's, and have been to various ones up and down the country, but it was Chris's first visit to the Newcastle one.  I'm a Gold Card Member at Jamie's, which means that every time I visit if I show my Gold Card my guests and I all receive a complimentary light bite.  It was the first time I'd used my it too, so we also got £10 off our meal!  It's completely free to join Jamie's Gold Card scheme and if you visit often I'd really recommend it.

The beautiful birthday boy awaiting his food!

So our light bite, a little cup of mushroom soup with croutons, came first and was so filling we decided to make it do as a starter.  Chris ordered steak and chips for his main (which he can assure me was the best steak he's ever had!) and I ordered 'Lamb Chops Scottaditto' which was absolutely huge!  The lamb was so succulent it fell off the bone and the polenta chips were super crispy on the outside and soft in the centre...absolute perfection.  I was full after a few mouthfuls but somehow managed to eat it all, it was so good!
It would have been rude not to get a dessert (after all it was Chris's birthday!) so his inner chocolate monster chose the 'Epic Brownie', whereas I got the lighter option of 'Tangy Pineapple and Frozen Yoghurt' but as you can see from his face, he was definitely happy with his choice!

With full tummies and a little tiddly from the cocktails, we then headed home after what had been an amazing day! If only every day was a celebration.

I gave Chris his presents early this year, but no birthday would be complete without cake, so on his actual birthday (the Tuesday after) this is what we did...

It's my birthday soon, I wonder what we'll get up to!
Have you been to Jamie's?

  1. I do like Floritas on a Saturday afternoon when it's peaceful (I'm sure it's a different story in the evening!) I've still not been to Jamie's, not only have I not made it to the Newcastle restaurant, I've never been to any of them!
